PROBST, JOHANN MICHAEL. [Atlas Minor ex tabulis geographicis]. 19 hand-colored engraved maps, including one celestial. Oblong 4to, 205x305 mm, contemporary wrappers; maps bright and clean. Augsburg, circa 1798

Additional Details

Uncommon late edition of Probst's Atlas Minor with maps dated between 1780 and 1798. Aside from the celestial chart the atlas contains a map of the world in 2 hemispheres, maps of Europe, Asia, Africa and a map of the Americas (Western Hemisphere). The rest of the maps are of European countries. A title-page was not always issued with the later versions of this atlas, explaining why this copy lacks one. About half of the maps were engraved by Johann Georg Probst, a brother of Johann Michael Probst, the other half by Johann Conrad Probst, another brother. The map of the world shows California as a peninsula but the map of Americas shows California as an island (McLaughlin No. 242, with date circa 1784).
